What is effect of Sulphate in Concrete?

What is effect of Sulphate in Concrete?

Sulphate attack can originate from ground water, soils, seawater or industrial effluents. Sulphate present in sulphate solutions convert the free lime in the hardened concrete to calcium sulphate, and the hydrates of calcium aluminates and ferrites to sulphoferrrites. These conversions occupy more than double the solid volume, which results in disruption, expansion and cracking of the concrete.
